Perspective by Cindy Sage: The misguided program of mandatory ‘smart wireless meters’ has done more to undercut the gains in public support for energy conservation in this country than any other single factor. The national shift to embrace energy conservation in the face of climate change has been derailed by mandatory ‘wireless smart meter’ programs. And judging by the public outrage against the National Security Agency (NSA) spying program revealed by Edward Snowden last summer, Americans have come to understand that government mandates for smart meters is likely one more ‘deep drilling project’ on their personal habits, preferences, life styles and medical conditions.
The smart meter program is widely seen as a spying, snooping, expensive, potentially hazardous, involuntary and entirely unnecessary burden for which energy conservation is a mirage. It is unlikely that Americans will stand for public utilities spying on their homes using energy use and conservation as the ruse, and make money on these data by selling their personal information to third party information brokers for profit.
How could one bad idea so completely galvanize such enormous and widespread public resistance? And lead to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) review of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) wireless safety standards and general distrust for government ideas about energy conservation? And undercut public support for some national environmental groups? It is really quite stunning how a single failed corporate/governmental strategy could backfire so rapidly and so completely.
Some national environmental groups bought into the technology, mistakenly gave it a ‘green’ endorsement, and actively partnered with ‘smart’ technology corporations like the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). Some have publicly promoted the ‘smart meter’ as a good way to achieve energy conservation. Other environmental groups have been silent. They have turned a blind eye and refuse to take a position.
Environmental group leadership and independence of scientific assessment has taken a huge blow and will take decades to recover. Donors will think twice about where they send their donations to protect the environment. They believed in false promises but didn’t look deep enough. The national priority to convince families to conserve energy for the good of the planet has taken a direct blow. Who can believe in them now?
It shows how little anyone really knew what these meters entailed in ‘unintended consequences’. And how immediate the adverse effects would become visible.

My fiancée and dog both got grand mal seizures a week a part from each other right when my subdivision was connected to the grid. The only sad thing is my fiancée died at the age of 54. I heard these horrible vibrations behind my bed in the walls and through the coils in my mattress. I called FPL and had them remove my meter immediately. They did. I could still hear and feel the vibs from my neighbors homes though. It was so bad that I moved to the country. I can still hear and feel the vibs in my wall especially when I don’t turn off my wifi at night. I still wake up between 3 and 5 AM hearing different types of pulsing sounds. They vary. This prompted me to investigate.
Look up psychotroic weapons and UN Agenda 21. These smart meters are a part of a global plan. They emit frequencies that can and have the ability to do mind control. They can calm or agitate people and do all sorts of things. They can talk to the new appliances, AC’s, TV’s, etc. They can act as spy devises. I am stretching beyond, but I think these devises can link to the HAARP frequencies. Haarp can target large population areas. I also think the geo engineering that’s been going on with metals being dumped into the air to modify weather are all linked together. Look up the info for yourself especially about psychotroic weapons.
I think we must demand that these to be removed on our homes. Turn off your wifi. Tell your neighbors so they can get their units removed so their frequencies are not aimed at you.
Yes I have lots of comments, as this is such a hot issue! I just wish Canada would wake up and learn from the mistakes and challenges the Americans are having! And other comments to these people…..
Pamela: We ALWAYS have a choice – sometimes to make that choice is a lot of work. In a condo or apartment it is harder as you would have to educate the majority of residents/owners to be aware of the health, safety and privacy issues. Even the education part is time consuming – but it is worth it.
Jeremy: If you think that smart meters are the answer to your comment: “anything that will allow the consumer to better monitor their usage and spend can only be a good thing”, then you have not even read the one article to which you commented – let alone anything else. If you had you would KNOW it is not a good thing, as it does not even accomplish that!

I see a lot of reasons why people should NOT be getting a smart meter installed but I personally think that anything that will allow the consumer to better monitor their usage and spend can only be a good thing.

I am totally against the installation of smart meters and have been from the start. But like millions of others who live in apartments and condos in the city I had no choice in the matter. Hydro came in, walked into their special room and installed them without asking anyone.
The same goes for anyone who doesn’t have a locked gate around their property or a big dog standing next to the meter or just is away at work when the hydro people showed up, took advantage of their implied exclusion of trespassing, and changed the meter without asking permission.
I personally know of a fire that started in the meter room because of careless wiring of the smart meters (which, to my understanding you cannot accuse Hydro of causing). I personally know of people who had to move because of a bank of smart meters that were installed on the outside wall of their family room in a town house complex.
Millions of us don’t want the smart meter but have no voice.

The electric company is saying they don’t think people will want to get rid of their “Spy and Fry” meters. That’s because they don’t know just how diabolically dangerous digital electric meters are!
Cindy lets us know in the article that fewer than 10% of households with HAN, or Home Area Network technology, that will let your appliances communicate with your “smart” meter and allow you to track energy usage, use it!
I wasn’t 100% sure how HAN worked, just had a vague notion, so I looked it up.

Just another reason to get rid of your digital meter – you can save just as much energy, I believe, by unplugging devices you’re not using and turning off the light when you leave a room!
On a slightly different note, I’d like to make people aware that the largest electric provider in Georgia is now offering an opt out for $19 a month. I’ve been getting heartbreaking reports of people that are suffering, or who are deathly afraid for the health of their children, because they have a “smart” meter on the side of their home. They are extremely relieved to have this option.
It’s nowhere near an ideal solution. Ideally, they would never have put these not-tested-for-human-safety electric meters up in the first place! But we are going to keep working to get them all down. In the meantime, anyone who has Georgia Power can call their Residential Solutions Center at 800-642-5172. They say that they can replace them with a safe analog meter in about two weeks.
I would warn people to be aware that some areas in the country are putting up “Trojan horse” meters – electtic meters that still have a radiofrequency emitting transmitter in them.
